Four years ago today, the world was introduced to a big-voiced, bright-eyed starlet who would go on to become a global superstar. Ayra Starr’s self-titled EP was perhaps one of the most memorable debuts to emerge from the pool of next gen Afrobeats stars. Upon release, the project peaked at #1 on Nigeria iTunes, as well as Apple music charts across Africa. It also spawned her first hit song “Away”, a timeless heartbreak song that remains a fan-favourite to this day.
The 5 track record serves as one of the many witnesses to Ayra Starr’s keen artistic interpretation of the female psyche, particularly in relation to coming-of-age and matters of the heart. Elements of RnB, neo-soul and traditional Afrobeat rhythms are prominent on this body of work, birthing a fresh, evergreen sound.
The second track “Ija” projects a nubile sensuality, while “Ditr” weaves a captivating tale about the struggles and complexities that come with adolescence. Produced by Don Jazzy himself, “Sare” explores fairytale romance over an uptempo beat which features a sample of the Lijadu Sisters 70s hit “Orere Elejigbo”. The subtle homage paid here underscores Ayra Starr’s ethos of championing female voices in her music, a trend we have continued to see in her later work.
Though the music itself is endlessly gratifying, the beauty of the Ayra Starr EP lies in its overwhelming realness, as well as the comforting relatability sparked by the Afropop star’s candid storytelling. Ayra Starr never fails to find herself in the music, and her fearless expression creates space for her listeners to do the same. To relive the grand unveiling of Africa’s diamond girl, click here!
