Welcome To The Bleeding Hearts Club: A Real Yearner’s Playlist

Roses are out, bleeding hearts are in! These crimson, heart-shaped buds often represent lost love, heartbreak and a sincere outpouring of emotion-all very common post Valentine’s day. For some reason, Valentine’s seems to lead to a lot more break-ups than usual (source: trust me bro).  If you’re part of the unlucky couples affected by this strange phenomenon and find yourself unable to stop thinking about your ex, this playlist is for you. Even if you haven’t experienced a break-up recently and just enjoy yearning for the love of the game, this playlist is still for you. Keep reading to find out which songs you’ll be crying to this week!

Spaceship Jocelyn-Rema

Off his third EP “Bad Commando, Spaceship Jocelyn” is an undeniable gem. This cosmic emo-trap tune is the perfect band-aid for any bleeding heart, and Rema’s ethereal vocals will definitely leave you feeling a little lighter. In between lines about dripping, shining and spaceships in his eyes, Rema expresses that he misses his muse so much that he is close to tears-a feeling we’re sure some of you can relate to  (Also, did anyone else peep the “Baby (Is It a Crime)” tease towards the end of the song? serious foreshadowing).

Winter & Summer- Magixx

A single off his debut album “I Dream In Colour”, this song should definitely be in every real yearner’s playlist.  Although “Winter & Summer” explores the dark side of lost love and features some pretty graphic visuals, the song itself is surprisingly calming and might actually help you relax if you find yourself feeling a little trigger happy in the midst of those post-valentine blues. We can’t think of a better song for yearning-and possibly nursing some violent thoughts  (please put the gun down and go to therapy. Please).

Beggie Beggie- Ayra Starr ft. Ckay

For those of you so caught up in your yearning that you’re thinking of texting your ex-situationships yet again, pause and listen to this song before making that decision. Even if Ayra’s words of self affirmation towards the end don’t remind you of your worth,  Ckay’s verse should be enough to make you reconsider (“Say I led you on, you sef dey follow me” is a crazy thing to say, this author is still gagged by the audacity). Don’t be a beggie beggie please, suffer in silence (or play this song, whatever floats your boat) and move on!

Falling- Ladipoe ft. Tems

Although yearning is often an illogical activity purely driven by rogue emotions, Ladipoe offers room for some much needed self-reflection with his song “Falling” feat. Tems. On this dreamy RnB track, Ladipoe reminisces about a past relationship and is quick to admit that their fallout is probably his fault-he calls her “the queen he lost in two moves” and says “I wanna kiss the scar, even though I left the bruise on your heart”. We love a self-aware king who also has a way with words!

It Hurts- Johnny Drille ft. Don Jazzy

Johnny Drille & Don Jazzy really made a heartbreak song for the ages with this one. “It Hurts” is the first track on their joint EP “Hard Guy Confessions”, and this track really does tell all.  The sonics are sublime, the lyrics are crushing, and the chorus is particularly karaoke-worthy. This one is for the yearners that like to sing their sorrows away in the shower (or in an open field, Troy Bolton style).
